What is a Urogynecologist?
A urogynecologist is a fellowship-trained and subspecialty board-certified surgeon who specializes in the care of women with pelvic floor disorders.
After completing medical school and a residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology or Urology, urogynecologists complete three additional years of fellowship training (for seven years of surgical training after medical school) to provide comprehensive clinical care and minimally invasive surgical treatments for pelvic floor disorders, childbirth injury, complications from gynecologic surgery (fistulas), and congenital genitourinary disorders. Urogynecologists also conduct leading-edge research to improve patient outcomes. After completing fellowship training, urogynecologists must complete certification exams offered by the American Boards of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Urology. Therefore, they are board-certified in Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery in addition to their primary specialty of Obstetrics & Gynecology or Urology. If you are considering treatment for urinary or bowel control problems or pelvic organ prolapse, you should ask your primary care provider to refer you to a specialist with fellowship-training and board-certification in Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery. Ask your physician about their training and certification. Helpful Resources Meet Our Team
